Forest Products

Forest products are an integral part of what Creeksong Farm produces.  We produce lumber from our 12 acres of mature hardwood forest and firewood from timber stand improvement and clearing land for pasture.  We also produce fence posts for our own farm and sawn timbers from rot resistant species.

Firewood

Our firewood is comprised of all hardwood species.  The most common are locust, hickory, ash, maple, black birch, beech, oak, and cherry.  We cut all wood at least 8 months before it is sold.  Wood delivered to your home will be split and delivered in our 3/4 ton longbed truck for $90.00.  This price is for delivery to Zionville, Creston, Trade, Vilas, and Sugar Grove.  Delivery to other areas is available, but call us at (336)385-6014 for pricing.

Lumber

We also produce lumber from our hardwood stands.  Sawn on our bandsaw mill at any desired dimensions, our lumber can be used for many purposes.   From poplar siding to rough oak flooring to replacing a sill with rot resistant locust, we can generally produce the right sized lumber of the right species.  Available species include oak, ash, cherry, sugar maple, red maple, beech, basswood, hickory, locust, and poplar.  Lumber will be sawn when you order, as we do not have space to store every species and dimension needed.  Call (336) 385-6014 for price quotes.

Forestry Operation Philosophy

In our forestry operations we strive to produce the best products with the least ecological impact.  In place of a skidder we use a 60hp 4 wheel drive tractor with a Fransgard skidding winch.  This minimizes soil disruption and compaction as the tractor is light and maneuverable and the winch allows the front of logs to be lifted as they’re skidded.  In place of high grading (cutting only what is valuable and leaving the rest to reproduce) we use worst-first selection in our mature woods.  This way, trees with defects or species that are not as marketable are culled and high value species are allowed to reproduce.  This practice results in an improved woodland over time.  We also practice TSI (Timber Stand Improvement).  This involves cutting “junk” trees such as buckeye, hornbeam, wahoo, and small beech trees which makes room for species of higher value.  The goal is to have a healthy and productive forest of mixed age, undamaged by major soil disruption and runoff.
